ACSM (Advocacy, Communication & Social Mobilization) Project for TB control in India
At the height of our glory SHIS was recommended by Central TB Division Govt. of India, to be a part of TB – Consortium along with internationally renowned NGOs like GLRA, ADRA, CARE etc. and were assigned by USAID (World Vision- country convener of National TB Consortium) the task of running Advocacy  Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) Programme, in the districts of Nadia, Kolkata and South 24 Parganas with possibility of further extension in North Bengal Districts in near future. Alongside CARE, we are running TB Control and Awareness Programme in Malda and Murshidabad Districts under “Initiative to Manage People Centered Alliances in Control of Tuberculosis” (IMPACT). With an estimated 1.9 million cases annually, India is the highest TB afflicted country in the world and has one fifth of the world's total infectious cases.
Approximately 325,000 Indian die due to TB every year, with over 70% in the economically productive age group (15-54 years). This project aims to contribute to the efforts of RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program) to reduce TB-related morbidity and mortality, and to accelerate progress towards achieving the targets of the Global Stop TB Strategy for 2006-2015.The project is being supported by USAID and World Vision India. The members of National TB Consortium (a civil society movement for TB control experienced in mobilizing communities for TB and with expertise in technical and research areas) are working as Sub Recipient of this project. Being a member of NTC, SHIS has been implementing this project from 1st' October 2008 in three districts viz. South 24 Parganas, Nadia & Kolkata in close coordination and collaboration with the Government of India's Central TB Division, State TB Division, concerned District's CMOH and DTO.

Objectives of this project are:

1. To engage and empower communities for a greater role in TB control and care through improved knowledge based attitudes and participation.

2. To improve access to and utilization of TB diagnosis and treatment through engagement of the private health sector and communities.

3. To address emerging challenges of MDR-TB and TB-HIV co-infection.The project is increasing awareness of TB and its related issues, accelerate advocacy through SHIS, along with the district level and state level health authority, and mobilize local government bodies (Panchayati Raj) and community based organizations (CBOs) by the enlisted NGOs (i.e. 43 NGOs in South 24 Parganas, 18 NGOs in Nadia & 5 NGOs in Kolkata) to adopt the rights-based Patient Charter on TB Care. The project is improving engagement of all care providers, systematically improving their interface with the general health system and with the RNTCP. Further, it is addressing TB in the workplace and prepares communities to understand and execute their evolving role in the context of treatment relapse, drug resistance and co-infection with HIV. This project also emphasises on equitable access of TB services to women. Therefore, various Sensitization Programs had been carried out under South 24 Parganas, Kolkata and Nadia District for the representatives of enlisted NGOs i.e. OD & Leadership Development Training Program for enlisted NGOs, DTO interface with enlisted NGOs, RNTCP Level-II Training Program for the enlisted NGOs along with RNTCP Staff Sensitization Program on ACSM TB Project.
