Background

  • Established in 1979 by a group of young activists under motivation of Brother Gaston Dayanand.
  • MA Wohab was the prime activist who was later joined by Sabitri Pal.
  • Started working with Bidi Rollers of Bhangar to provide medical relief from Tuberculosis.
  • The first clinic started in 1980 in a small tea shop in Bhangar, in Sunderbans area of West Bengal, India.
  • Tuberculosis was the focus issue. SHIS identified rural poor villages suffering from the vice like grip of TB and has been working under active guidance of Dr. Tobias Schueth.
  • With local donations and individual supports, the clinic activities grew.
  • Linkage with Government hospitals followed.
  • In 1986, Brother Gaston introduced renowned French writer Dominique Lapierre to SHIS.
  • The friendship with Dominique started since then and the deep bond continues.
  • By late 80s, SHIS analyzed the causes for TB & its effect in people. Identified poverty is the root cause.
    Initiated a comprehensive approach to TB eradication.
  • Has been undertaking various development projects for self help to the villagers.
  • Representatives of World Health Organization visited SHIS in May 2001 to go round the activities and expressed their utmost satisfaction towards the dedication of the members and volunteers of SHIS.
  • Bengali Translated adaptation of a WHO publication "The Microscope - a Practical Guide"
  • Implementing projects like RNTCP and CB DOT on TB control, NGO Net working in West Bengal, School Education, Alternate Infrastructure in Health services for at least one in each lakh.
