Most
of the villages and islands in Sunderbans area where SHIS carries
on its activities, remain marooned during most of the time especially
in the monsoon. Poor inhabitants of these areas scarcely get opportunity
for medical treatment either due to improper transportation or lack
of fund to reach far to a hospital. It was Wohab and Sabitri who at
the instance of Dominique Lapierre launched a boat dispensary, first
of its kind in the remote Sunderbans area. The first boat was inaugurated
by Dominique Lapierre on December 02, 1997. |
Today SHIS has four such Boats dispensaries equipped with all medicinal aids, accommodation for 10 persons with toilets, bath and a kitchen, a health clinic with bed, saline stand, mobile X-ray and Pathological unit along with Oxygen cylinder manned by trained health workers and qualified doctors, Store room to stock the medicine, safety equipments (raft, life jacket, fire extinguisher) and other door to door emergency services. These boats reach even the marooned villages of Sunderbans area, which are plunged in deep water during monsoon making medical services inaccessible. The lone boat dispensary to cover the vast area of Sunderbans was too meager to meet the requirement of the people living there. It was a great moment when the second boat dispensary was launched and inaugurated by Dominique on 28 November 1998 with medical facilities that include Medicines, Pathological Clinic, X-ray Unit and Doctors.
