Kala-azar Control Program

Kala-azar or Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic disease caused by an Intracellular Protozoan (Leishmania species) and transmitted to man by female Phlebotomus Sand Fly.

With the Financial assistance provided by Irish Aid, SHIS imported Miltofosine, the revolutionized drug to fight against Kala-Azar in place of Sodium Stibogluconate, which has proved to be too painful for injection.

SHIS made an impact in the target area of Kandaran, a small village of Malda, which was infested with Kala-azar to achieve 100% cure rate through Miltofosine. SHIS took steps to spray DDT in the household as well as created enough awareness through community meeting and strengthening the referral chain.
