The deaf have certain obstacles to overcome. It seems not unreasonable that, while receiving daily assistance from an expert teacher, they may more rapidly assume the manners and learn the articulation of hearing persons, if they associate with them when outside the classroom.

Hearing loss has far-reaching, critical effects on childhood development of cognitive (thinking) and linguistic (language) skills. The occurrence of other disabilities in combination with diminished hearing creates "additional learning problems" which significantly add to the complexity of educating the student who is deaf or hard of hearing. |
SHIS Deaf and Dumb School was established to provide education & vocational training and care to hearing impaired children and guidance to their families towards becoming independent individuals.
The school has 5 teaching and 2 non-teaching staff.
Teachers interact with parents of the children on a regular basis. The medium of instruction is Bengali. Stress is given to help in the physical and mental development of the children. Children are trained in various sports, and co-curricular activities.
SHIS visualize upgrading the school to a boarding school. SHIS has gone for group hearing aids, impedance audio meters, induction loop system and other hearing aids.
SHIS promotes the 'Deaf & Hearing Partnership' to break down the barriers and change attitudes in the society. Deaf young people are encouraged to take leadership roles and motivated to take control of their lives.
There are no common strategies for the deaf and dumb students with additional learning problems primarily because each individuals learning profile are different depending on the number and nature of the various influencing factors.
Generally speaking the following strategies are taken in SHIS Deaf and Dumb School.
- Pictures and picture symbols to support speech and/or signs has proven beneficial
- Aural/oral remediation techniques used to improve listening skills.
- Behavior techniques that include clearly defined choices and expectations with natural consequences.
- Individual or group counseling.
