The SHIS Laboratory services are organised as 4 major divisions:
- Microbiology
- Histopathology
- Biochemistry
- Clinical pathology
The department is manned by a qualified microbiologist who also heads the laboratory services, 2 qualified pathologists and a biochemist, assisted by 4 trained technicians.

Hours of service and access:
Biochemistry, Clinical Pathology and Microbiology laboratories work 7 days a week, through the year and functions from 8 AM to 5 PM on all week days (Monday - Sunday).
Microbiology
The Microbiology laboratory is manned by a qualified microbiologist and assisted by 4 trained technologists. Facilities available include:
- Bacteriology:
A) Standard staining techniques
B) Culture of blood , urine, stool, sputum, pus, other body fluids and
C) Antibiotic sensitivity testing by standard disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) technique.

Fungal Culture
Fungal mounts
- Serology:
Regular Serological tests to detect:
Typhoid fever - Widal test
Sexually transmitted diseases - VDRL, TPHA
Hepatitis 'B' virus infection - HBsAg (ELISA), Anti HBs levels,
Hepatitis 'C' Virus infection - Anti HCV IgG Ab
HIV - ELISA test and Western Blot
Leptospirosis - ELISA - IgM Ab
Dengue Fever - ELISA & card test - IgM & IgG Ab
and others (i.e.,) TORCH Panel Serology, Cold Agglutination, Paul-Bunnel
- Food & water samples for bacteriological analysis: offered to other hospitals, industries etc.
- Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection from endoscopic biopsy specimens
- Special stains:
- for Cryptosporidium in stool specimens
- for Pneumocystis carinii in respiratory secretions
- Sterility checking - operation theatres. Offered to outside hospitals/ nursing homes. Trained technologist sent for sample collection from our microbiology laboratory
The Radiology & Imaging Department is a round the clock diagnostic facility manned by a full-time qualified radiologist and two visiting consultants assisted by 2 trained radiographers.

Facilities available:

Conventional radiology:
(Plain X–Rays, contrast gastrointestinal & genitourinary procedures). The department is equipped with Simens X – Ray machine.

Ultrasound services for general abdominal studies, obstetrics and gynaecological ultrasound and small parts imaging.

Echocardiography: performed by a fully trained technician under the supervision of a cardiologist.

The Radiology Department is open 6 days a week, for those patients requiring urgent or emergency care, the unit is opened within 30 minutes.
All other tests will need prior appointments to be made. |
