SHIS RSM under Rural Sanitation Programme envisages promoting "Environmental Sanitation" as a package aiming to address the issues to reduce the probability of people's exposure to diseases and providing hygienic environment and taking measures to break the cycle of diseases by improved management of human, animal and domestic wastes.

This includes but is not limited to :-

Southern Health Improvement Samity (SHIS) has setup an ‘eco rural sanitary mart’ at various areas and the main production unit is SHIS headquarter in Bhangar.

The Rural Sanitary Mart (RSM) of SHIS, as a stand alone or combined with the Production Center, is an effective strategy of SHIS promotion of safe and hygienic sanitation to meet sanitary ware and services’ demand. It functions as a hub for providing low cost sanitary items and services. SHIS is having its own production center for manufacturing of low cost sanitary hardware generally managed by a group of dedicated and efficient team.

The objective of establishment of RSM is not limited to its functioning to accelerate the pace of the sanitation programme but also to provide need based, locale specific, people centered system of outreach services of economically viable low cost sanitation options including the various low cost designs of the super structure and to catalyze the change in behavior and adoption of hygiene facilities through IEC materials such as pamphlets, posters, brochures, etc.

SHIS RSM is an outlet dealing with the materials required for the construction of not only sanitary latrines but also other sanitary facilities required for individuals, families and the environment in the rural areas. SHIS RSM is having those items, which are required as a part of the sanitation package. It is a kind of commercial enterprise with a social objective.

It has been observed that the peoples’ initiatives for better sanitation has been taking shape and large numbers of latrine are also constructed by the individuals utilising outlets developed by individual ideas. SHIS Sanitary Mart played an important and vital role in receiving “Nirmal Gram Puraskar” for total Sanitation in Bhogali – II Gram Panchayat in Bhangar – II Block under South 24 Parganas District alongwith Mohanpur Gram Panchayat in Minakhan Block and Kulti, Salipur, Sonapukur-Sankarpur, Gopalpur - II and Bakjuri Gram Panchayat in Haroa Block and Nayabasti Gram Panchayat in Baduria Block under North 24 Parganas District. SHIS Sanitation Mart has proved its efficiency and its role in mobilizing the community for adopting environmentally safe sanitation.
