RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program)

Government of India has reinitiated a national program for control of the deadly disease Tuberculosis that is spread among the poor people of village where proper treatment and specialist hospitals do not exist. SHIS has relentlessly working on this matter for last 23 years. This has not gone out of sight of the Union Government. SHIS has been bestowed with confidence to run 4 model Tuberculosis units where more than 20 Laks people will be covered under Tuberculosis Control program. This was an additional responsibility on the shoulder to SHIS. But it took it as an added feather in its cap to have an opportunity to work for mankind. The first program started in North 24 Pgs on Mar 01, 2001 and subsequently in South 24 Parganas, on April 01, 2001.

The project has been named as "Minakhan Model". Continuous training is being imparted to the Health workers at the grass root level to run the model dispensaries and Specialist doctors are to visit these Units for effective supervision.
Here is the graph that envisaged the treatment mode during the year 2001-2002

War against Tuberculosis has been the prime activity of SHIS. Relentless effort by the SHIS members to fight against this deadly disease in over 2000 villages in 33 blocks in 6 districts of West Bengal, gained recognition in the national and international level.. SHIS carries out the Tuberculosis Control Program in South 24 Parganas district by its own effort. Meanwhile, Government of India planned to implement Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP). SHIS offered its service to the Government and has been bestowed with the confidence of the government for implementing the RNTCP program in North 24 Parganas district. The collaboration has been named by the Central TB Division, New Delhi, as “Minakhan Model”.

SHIS once again acknowledges the support and aid rendered by Dominique & Dominique Lapierre towards this project. Dominique was kind enough to render aid to the tune of 22.4 million for many projects of SHIS including execution of RNTCP program during the year 2001-02. He has been relenlessly supporting through advice, contact, finance and moral support. In fact TB Control in Sunderban region has been the prime goal of Dominique.

Directly Observed Treatment (DOT) with short course chemo therapy is one of the prime means of treating the TB patients. This forms the integral part of RNTCP being administered. SHIS can proudly enunciate that through its trained health workers, the RNTCP program is being implemented in over 908 villages of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal with the government aid in collaboration with District TB Control Society - North 24 Parganas, Barasat. In its own capacity and with its own resource, SHIS also implements the DOT program in over 1202 villages of South 24 Parganas.
